Purbeck Council Elections - Lib Dem gains, Conservative losses12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 6th May 2008
Conservatives have lost overall control of Purbeck District Council after 9 years, following gains by the Liberal Democrats in the elections on Thursday. Against a rising Conservative vote nationally, Lib Dems gained a seat in Wareham with Keith Critchley defeating the Chairman of the Council by 330 votes. They successfully held seats in St Martin and Upton East with increased majorities, held one seat in Lytchett Matravers ward and narrowly missed gaining the second by just 14 votes. Overall Lib Dems in Mid Dorset and North Poole polled (51.04%) of the vote. Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole commented; 'This was an excellent result for the Lib Dems in my constituency. 'The balance on Purbeck District Council is now 11 Lib Dems, 11 Conservatives, and 2 Independents. The big question now is what will the Independents do?'
